Most swimwear fabrics in the world are made from petroleum. Nylon, for decades the gold standard for bikinis and swimsuits, is derived from fossil resources – a process that consumes non-renewable resources. However, there is another way, and it begins where most stories end: with waste.
Recycled nylon is made from material that would otherwise burden our seas and landfills. Discarded fishing nets, fabric scraps from weaving mills, old carpets, and industrial plastics are collected – materials that would otherwise end up in landfills or drift in the ocean, threatening marine life. Particularly problematic are the so-called ghost nets: lost or abandoned fishing nets are among the largest sources of ocean plastic and entangle and kill marine animals like turtles and dolphins. From this problem, a raw material is created.
The special thing: It is not a compromise.
One might assume that a yarn made from waste is second choice – less durable, less beautiful. The opposite is true, and the reason lies in the process. Conventional mechanical recycling shreds material and loses quality with each pass. The leading recycled nylon in the industry, ECONYL® from the Italian manufacturer Aquafil, takes a different approach: instead of mechanically shredding the material, the regeneration system uses an advanced chemical process that breaks down nylon-6 waste to its original molecular structure – thus, the recycled nylon retains 100% of the properties of new, petroleum-based nylon.
For you as a wearer, this means: no noticeable difference in grip, elasticity or durability – with a radically different origin. And there is one more thing that is crucial for swimwear: Chemically, regenerated nylon is identical to new material, equally durable, robust and elastic – ideal for sports and swimwear. Exactly these properties – shape stability in water, resistance to salt, chlorine and sunscreen – depend on the purity of the fibre. A yarn that retains its molecular integrity fits as precisely after the fiftieth swim as it does after the first.
The numbers that count.
Sustainability is a word that is easy to say and hard to substantiate. With regenerated nylon, it can be measured. According to the 2021 sustainability report of the Aquafil Group, for every 10,000 tonnes of ECONYL® raw material, 65,100 tonnes of CO₂ equivalents in emissions are avoided. The leverage is created right at the source: Because the production of new nylon requires adipic acid, the production of which releases nitrous oxide – a greenhouse gas that is far more harmful to the climate than CO₂ – manufacturing from nylon waste instead of new material avoids both CO₂ and nitrous oxide emissions.
And the circle does not close just once. Unlike conventional mechanical recycling, the material returns through chemical depolymerisation to the exact same molecular structure and purity as new nylon – it can be recycled infinitely without loss of quality or performance. A swimsuit thus does not become the endpoint of a value chain, but a station in a cycle.
What this means for swimwear in particular.
Swimwear has a paradoxical relationship with the sea: it is made for the water – and often contributes to polluting it. When the very fabric you wear on the beach is made from material that was previously salvaged from that same sea, this relationship is reversed.
